The message in the cartoon communicates exactly why I think newspapers will survive. I got tired of Twitter after only a few weeks because it there were too many people telling me what they were eating for breakfast, or that they were lonely or that they were on their way to the bathroom. Facebook is close to falling into the same trap.
However, there are social media avenues were intelligent discussion is taking, such as this one, which gives me some hope for this medium. That said, nothing beats a good broadsheet by the fire, or on an airplane.
I agree…Twitter is a tricky one. It’s easy to drown in the overwhelming number of relatively insignificant details. But I think it’s probably important for newspapers to test out anything that might remotely work – just to see.
HaHa that’s really funny
I think so too…
I can’t believe that there that close on twitter
it’s sort of weird
True…
Okay, here’s where I differ from many folk on the whole social media versus newspapers issue. To me, they aren’t closely related.
I think it’s the idea that younger people are turning to cyberspace and getting news from alternative sources, which makes advertisers follow and makes it more difficult for newspapers to survive. Without newspapers we wouldn’t have such a diversity of voices and opinions which is very healthy in democracies. In cyberspace, it’s easy to search out just the voices that agree with yours and shut out the rest. If you’re reading a newspaper, with lots of view points your paradigm might be expanded…
The only type of Twitter I like is the sound from a bird’s beak…. and I get pleasantly dizzy from the smell of a good book, and nothing beats a newspaper crossword or a good Sudoku when killing time. Yes, I am addicted to these….
Very funny and I can certainly relate!
